Science Weekly - Put a little science in your week

Looking to add some hands-on science to your school?

Check out Science Weekly!

What is Science Weekly?

  • “Science Weekly is a curriculum supplement that offers an interdisciplinary and inquiry approach to enhance teachers knowledge and skills in teaching science and literacy.”
  • Each issue of Science Weekly is written at six reading levels‚ covering grades K–6. This allows parents with two or more children to order the same topic for each child. (Level Pre-A to Level E)
  • Science Weekly will arrive at your home or school as a 4-page issue varying in the depth of study, depending on the grade level you have chosen.
  • Each issue looks at a main topic and it is expanded upon in students’ reading, writing, vocabulary, hands-on lab experiment, math, and critical thinking skills.

Teacher Prep Time??

Just read over the included teaching notes. They include what the instructions are for each section - at each grade level and questions to ask.  Also gather a few household materials needed for your hands-on lab.

You can check out a complete sample issue on the Science Weekly website here.

They also offer a new online Interactive Program!

And printable Coloring Books!

We completed the Science Weekly issue on The Flu.

What did mom like?

I liked that the teacher notes were laid out nicely and easy to follow; not a lot of prep time. I read over the grade level that fit my kids (1st) and gathered a few items needed for the hands-on lab.

I also liked that it went over vocabulary and included a hands-on activity.

What did my kids like?

The FLU lesson is colorful and interesting with a brief hands-on activity.

Would we use Science Weekly?

We completed our FLU lesson in 3 days.  It could be done quicker or slower depending on your time frame and students. I think the lessons would take longer in the upper grades.  We just used the Level A lesson.  I think a parent can take the lesson further with library books or videos as a supplement.

I could see us using it as a science supplement to enhance our current curriculum or some extra fun in our science during the summer!

What did mom like about KaBongo?

  • Auto-level games – more challenging as my child played them
  • My girls, ages 5 and 7, were able to play ALL the games with NO guidance from me – the program tells the child what to do in each game
  • Educational games that teach skills and geared to the young child
  • The games are not timed … so my girls were not frustrated
  • A progress report is emailed to me as they progress through the levels plus I can see what games they like to play

This is a nice program my girls enjoy to play even on the weekends!

What mom and the girls did not like about GoGo Kabongo?

  • The glitches with the games: Robo Bobo puzzle pieces where missing, the mouse would be visible on the left and right column but not on the games screen, sometimes there was audio but no game, and worst of all …. their reward sticker choices came up as blank screens!
  • This is a Beta program (I am told this is why there a glitches)
  • Their customer service did say they were working on the issues (which they were quick to back to me on via email)
  • Even with the glitches my girls still LOVE to play the games !

Sketch Tuesday: Something with Claws

The girls are assigned a Sketch Tuesday theme of:

 Something With Claws

I thought they’d choose a tiger, bear or lion…. no.  They drew a bird.  Yes, birds have claws that are important to their livelihood but not what I’d consider ……grrrrrr claws.

MFW Adventures: Wk 29 & Family Fun

Our Adventures took us to Kansas, West Virginia, Nevada, and Nebraska this week.  We learned about pioneer travels, the Hoover Dam, and Arbor Day.

Our favorite history Book Basket books:

rel

One of my favorite things about My Father’s World curriculum is their “Book Basket”  list in the teacher’s manual.  Each week, of our 34 weeks of lessons, has a list of anywhere from 10 – 20 books that I can chose from to enhance our studies.  I am blessed to live near some of the best libraries around.

These are a few of our favorite books this week!

Science:  Our science this week was about Magnets.  The girls had so much fun that we did 2 weeks of lesson in one day!  The activities in the kit are so fun and amazing that your kids will be entertained for hours!

I bought this Magnet Kit from the MFW Adventures Deluxe Package.

The kit contains all the items you need to do about 20 magnet activities.

magTo add to our stud,y I got a DVD about Magnetism from the library.

It is geared toward kids in grades 5 – 8 but the girls and I were able to understand the concepts presented.  It is entertaining and informative.

Bible: Our memory verse this week was John 10:14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me.

We read through some of the Psalms of David.  David loved to write songs to God.  It was refreshing to hear him pour his heart out to the Lord. Check out Psalm 28, 15, 100 and 23 – they will lift you up!

HomeschoolHighlightsThat wraps up our week in Adventures – check out what other MFW families did this past week at A Heart Like Water.

It was a family fun filled week this week……..

Prairie Primer:  Our Little House co-op kids sang songs, played ‘one potato – two potato”, and hopscotch as Mary and Laura enjoyed in Little House in the Prairie.

We visited Grandma and the cousins.

The cat disrupted our school day…by shredding the paper towel roll and sleeping on it! He is so proud of himself.

…… bad bad cat…………………

The girls earned a trip to a local ‘Fun Place’ with a few friends.
