My husband and I put in 6 Square Foot Gardens this year.  They look okay but I realized they would produce a lot more veggies if I have put in different kinds of compost. Instead I just used leaf compost and the soil is lacking ……… nitrogen (I think)!

I dropped by the Farmer’s Market and got a few bags of mushroom compost to enrich the soil.  Boy is that some stinky stuff

Check back soon for a garden update!

I am now working on filling a compost bin to enrich the soil for next year’s crops!

  1. Looking good! We raised our Square Foot Garden this season to 18 inches (for carrots), but I think our new soil is missing something too. Peas and beans are growing well, but everything else is stunted. We just added Miracle Grow fertilizer hoping to get them growing better. (It's been warm this summer so we hoped for better growing!) Over the fall and winter we'll be improving the soil with "chicken fertilizer" and our compost.

  3. Monica,

Your garden looks great! I dropped the ball on our gardening dreams this year. We got off to a really good start, but I failed to make the transition for our little seedlings and, well we'll have to try again next year. What I'm really missing are the herbs. I may go by the market and grab some basil, something just so the summer won't be a complete "gardening wash."
