Prairie Primer: Wigwams

lhOur “Little House” Co-op is reading through Little House on the Prairie this semester.

The children are building the homes the Indians lived in:  Wigwam, Tee Pee and a Longhouse.  They will also be making Indian jewelry.

Each family has picked an Indian Tribe to study through the course.  We picked the Iroquois Indians.

This is the book we are using for our lapbook:

I found a great resource on HomeschoolShare.com.  This is the lapbook designed specifically for the book above.  Check it out here!

“Little House” Happenings: Field Trip

Our “Little House” co-op went on a field trip this past week to a local historical farm.  The farm is set up in the 1880’s time period for families to experience life over 100 years ago.

“Little House” Happenings: Week 1

Have you always wanted to do the Prairie Primer – Little House in the Prairie Series?

I did too.  I thought how fun it would be to read the books, sew, make butter and milk a cow with my girls.

But then I thought again.

How can I do the Primer activities and ALL the other lessons I have to do during the day for both girls, along with laundry, dishes, pay bills, make dinner, teach phonics, mow 2 acres, instruct grammar, kiss boo-boos and check out the 13 butterflies my girls catch each day.

Then a lovely lady, named Eydie, came to our mom’s group.  She offered toIMG_0363 lead a co-op class for our children.  She opened her home and heart to our kids.  Thank you Miss Eydie for listening to the Lord and instruct our children!

Our Prairie Primer – “Little House” co-op class meets each Thursday morning from 9am – 11am.  The children receive homework each week to prepare before class the following week.

The parent and/or child reads just one chapter each week from the Little House in the Big Woods book.  One chapter each week is a great pace for our students who range from age 5 to 14.

Our students - I will have a group photo of all our students next week.

So now onto what the kids did in class on week 1…image

  • Discuss their picture vocabulary words from chapter 1: Hickory Tree, Forest Moss, Plains Rifle, Wolves, Brindle Bulldog, Grizzly Bear, Deer, Log Cabin, and Trundle Bed
  • Locate our state and Wisconsin on a US map
  • Discuss the food pyramid – compare our food sources/availability with that of the Little House time period and try beef jerky and pork rinds (some enjoyed them while others had second thoughts)
  • Older students shared their research projects on bear habitats, hibernation practices, and the food they eat.

  • Lastly, the kids made corn cob dolls (so did a few moms).

Tune in for Week 2 lessons:  We will be making butter, showing off our paper dolls, talking about owls and light and doing a little singing (eek!).
