Have you always wanted to do the Prairie Primer – Little House in the Prairie Series?
I did too. I thought how fun it would be to read the books, sew, make butter and milk a cow with my girls.
But then I thought again.
How can I do the Primer activities and ALL the other lessons I have to do during the day for both girls, along with laundry, dishes, pay bills, make dinner, teach phonics, mow 2 acres, instruct grammar, kiss boo-boos and check out the 13 butterflies my girls catch each day.
Then a lovely lady, named Eydie, came to our mom’s group. She offered to
lead a co-op class for our children. She opened her home and heart to our kids. Thank you Miss Eydie for listening to the Lord and instruct our children!
Our Prairie Primer – “Little House” co-op class meets each Thursday morning from 9am – 11am. The children receive homework each week to prepare before class the following week.
The parent and/or child reads just one chapter each week from the Little House in the Big Woods book. One chapter each week is a great pace for our students who range from age 5 to 14.
Our students - I will have a group photo of all our students next week.
So now onto what the kids did in class on week 1…
- Discuss their picture vocabulary words from chapter 1: Hickory Tree, Forest Moss, Plains Rifle, Wolves, Brindle Bulldog, Grizzly Bear, Deer, Log Cabin, and Trundle Bed
- Locate our state and Wisconsin on a US map
- Discuss the food pyramid – compare our food sources/availability with that of the Little House time period and try beef jerky and pork rinds (some enjoyed them while others had second thoughts)
- Older students shared their research projects on bear habitats, hibernation practices, and the food they eat.
- Lastly, the kids made corn cob dolls (so did a few moms).
Tune in for Week 2 lessons: We will be making butter, showing off our paper dolls, talking about owls and light and doing a little singing (eek!).
