I am happy to report that we made it through Week 1 of MFW Adventures with smiles on our face.
Here is what we did:
Bible – Arianna received her first Bible called the Discoverer’s Bible NIV version. She was very excited because she could call it her own and it was from her parents. I was very excited too because she realized the importance of reading God’s Word. It is written at a third grade reading level. It’s not a story Bible like the others we have around the house. It is God’s Word that she can read each morning. She has been enjoying Psalms 118 and Matthew 1.
MFW Adventures Bible time this year will take us through the names of Christ. We looked up the meaning of the girls names and Jesus too. I wrote each of the girls a personal letter on how their dad and I came up with their names. They enjoyed learning which parent came up with their first and middle names. I had fun reminiscing.
History – We discussed the meaning of each word in the Pledge of Allegiance. I didn’t even know the meanings until now! That was fun!
Here’s a great link for a Pledge of Allegiance printable.
Our history lessons walked us through an overview of the 50 states and 7 continents. We discussed a “rose compass” and general map reading. The girls drove a car on the map, with their finger, and quizzed each other on which direction they were driving.
We read about Leif Ericsson and the Vikings. Leif was added to our History Notebook and Timeline.
If you have a better idea of how I can build a time line, please send me a link to your blog. I just used hooks, paper clips, poster putty, and string. It’s so not creative!
These are my “book basket” favorites this week:
Science: We are doing Apologia’s Zoology 1: Flying Creatures this week. Our experiment was to create a cricket environment and determine which it liked best. I will have that information for you soon!
How did your week go? Comment on my blog with your url and I’ll check it out!
Hi Monica, I jumped here from MFWAdventures group. I appreciate you talking about your week. I start in 2 weeks and so will love hearing what you created did liked/not liked. Thanks, Cathy
ReplyDeleteHi, I am following your blog from the yahoo group as well. We started week 1 this week and have really enjoyed the past 2 days. I will admit that I have not started a timeline because I just cannot figure out how to do it!
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy and Christine,
ReplyDeleteSounds like we will be going on the Adventure together this year. I could use the help on the timeline too. It so plain. Let me know what you do!
Monica
If you go to MFW's message board, there are some very good ideas and even a few pics for the Timeline.
ReplyDeleteWe're doing ADV too. But mine is one of the very first editions, and your's sounds a bit spiffier than mine.
I will have to start working on my Name Letters now (7) in order to have them done in time!
Looks like you had a great week Monica...ADV yahoo group (fill me in???)
My timeline is plain as well but it works for me as I'm not an incredibly creative person. My blog as a picture of the beginning of our timeline on our wall under the school room post if you want to see it. It's hard to see in the picture though but it does span across the wall. We are about to be in Week 5 of Adventures when I get my act together and finally DO something this week! :) Oh and I noticed you have lots of Usborne books pictured above. :) I just became a consultant and will be posting about it shortly. If you'd like to do an E-Show to earn free books, let me know! :)
ReplyDeleteMonica,
ReplyDeleteWe did Adventures last year and loved it. The first week with the letter and the gift of the Bible was really special to my daughter. I did our timeline on the wall too ( I think that's what you're doing). I worked out well. You can sort of see it here http://isabelroberts.blogspot.com/2010/04/adventures-week-24-25.html
It's nothing special at all. Just construction paper. Enjoy week 2 :) Thanks also for your sweet comment earlier on my blog. I was actually on your blog reading when it posted. :) Kinda funny.

ReplyDeleteHi Monica! I found your blog on the MFW Blogroll, and I love it! We're also in the beginning stages of our Adventures year. (We start Week 3 tomorrow.) Hope you have a wonderful year, and I look forward to keeping up with your year on your blog! :)

Hi, Monica! I'm so excited to find your blog (from the MFW blogroll)! We are doing Adventures too! I also have two preschoolers, so we do preschool stuff on my blog (www.amazingmess.com).
ReplyDeleteHow great that you were a vet tech. Do you have lots of animals? My husband is a veterinarian, so I always get that question!! But I'm actually allergic to cats, so we just have one little dog!!
I look forward to following you and seeing your great ideas for the school year!
