“Little House” Happenings: Week 1

Have you always wanted to do the Prairie Primer – Little House in the Prairie Series?

I did too.  I thought how fun it would be to read the books, sew, make butter and milk a cow with my girls.

But then I thought again.

How can I do the Primer activities and ALL the other lessons I have to do during the day for both girls, along with laundry, dishes, pay bills, make dinner, teach phonics, mow 2 acres, instruct grammar, kiss boo-boos and check out the 13 butterflies my girls catch each day.

Then a lovely lady, named Eydie, came to our mom’s group.  She offered toIMG_0363 lead a co-op class for our children.  She opened her home and heart to our kids.  Thank you Miss Eydie for listening to the Lord and instruct our children!

Our Prairie Primer – “Little House” co-op class meets each Thursday morning from 9am – 11am.  The children receive homework each week to prepare before class the following week.

The parent and/or child reads just one chapter each week from the Little House in the Big Woods book.  One chapter each week is a great pace for our students who range from age 5 to 14.

Our students - I will have a group photo of all our students next week.

So now onto what the kids did in class on week 1…image

  • Discuss their picture vocabulary words from chapter 1: Hickory Tree, Forest Moss, Plains Rifle, Wolves, Brindle Bulldog, Grizzly Bear, Deer, Log Cabin, and Trundle Bed
  • Locate our state and Wisconsin on a US map
  • Discuss the food pyramid – compare our food sources/availability with that of the Little House time period and try beef jerky and pork rinds (some enjoyed them while others had second thoughts)
  • Older students shared their research projects on bear habitats, hibernation practices, and the food they eat.

  • Lastly, the kids made corn cob dolls (so did a few moms).

Tune in for Week 2 lessons:  We will be making butter, showing off our paper dolls, talking about owls and light and doing a little singing (eek!).

  1. Precious! It has been wonderful getting the kids together and doing things as a group. For our first year of homeschooling and our first time in a co-op, I have been pleasantly surprised with the Prairie Primer. I think my son is enjoying it too!
Thank you for posting this! I plan on taking my camera along as well and posting this on my blog.
    Blessings,

  2. Wow! That looks like a lot of fun! We just checked out the book "The World of Little House" from our library. It goes book by book and is very interesting. Has real life pictures, drawings of inside each of their houses, and a few activities that go along with the story in each book. My daughter is super excited to do some of the crafts/activities in it. Fun! Fun!

  5. How wonderful for you to have this co-op. I've been collecting ideas to do Prairie Primer for a while, but still haven't figured out how to fit it in. I'm hoping to get to it in the next year or two. Maybe I'll be blessed and find a wonderful group to share it with like you have.
