MFW Adventures Wrap-Up for Week 5

Wow – I can’t believe we have completed more that a month of school already!  Some days are enjoyable and others days have a few speed bumps along the way.

I do know that the Lord has called me to teach and train my children and He promises to give me the strength and wisdom.  I can tell a difference in the days I turn over to Him and spend time in the Word.  He gives me a spirit of peace, encouragement and grace – which I can then pour out upon my children.  Praise God - His mercies are new each day too!

Onto what we learned this week…Jesus as the Light of the World, the Mayflower and Pilgrims, and stars.

Bible: I absolutely LOVE the NIrV Discoverer’s Bible we are reading this year!  Is is a huge blessing in our home.  We read from John, 1 John and Revelation.  I have to share ALL of the wonderful promises in God’s Word we read this week because they are too precious to skip:

“God is faithful and fair.  If we admit we have sinned he will forgive us our sins.  He will forgive every wrong thing we have done.  He will make us pure.  We can share life with one another.  And the blood of Jesus, His Son, makes us pure from all sin.”

What more can I add to that precious gift?  …nothing    Even if that is all I taught my girls this week, they would still be receiving the BEST education ever – God’s written Word on their hearts!

History: This week’s history lessons were about the Pilgrims on the Mayflower.  We watched a few videos about how the Pilgrims fled England then onto Holland and finally sailed to America.  They wanted to freely worship God in the way they felt was right, not under the leadership of King James.  We also looked through many books about the attire, toys, games, schooling and chores of the children during colonial times.

We finished reading Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims book and discussed how he taught the white men to hunt, fish and plant corn.

I really enjoy the Draw – Write – Now series.

We used this book three….

… to draw these boats on our copywork pages for our history notebook!IMG_0393The girls are also memorizing the song American over the next four weeks.  It was written in 1832 by a man named Samuel Smith.  He wrote the four verses in only 30 minutes on a scrap piece of paper.

Science: Our focus in science were the STARS!  We have been learning about single stars but this week we discussed groups of stars called constellations.  The girls found them interesting because they make pictures.  We looked at the Ursa Major which means Great Bear and many others.

Our favorite constellation was the Big Dipper and it’s seven stars.  Marissa told me she saw the Little Dipper and the North Star from the bathroom window at lunch time this week.  Hummmm… not too sure about that.

Some of our favorite Book Basket items this week:

Because of the holiday and we started our “Little House in the Big Woods” homeschool co-op this week, the girls have not yet done the activities from week 5 yet.  The activities include: make a Sun Wall hanging, plant corn and make an Oiled Paper Window.  We’ll have to do them this weekend!

If you want to see what our co-op is doing each week with the Prairie Primer curriculum – stop back for the post called “Little House” Happenings!

  4. Monica, they did so good on their notebook page drawings! They look great!

I can't wait to read about your Little House co-op. We have the Prairie Primer and I had planned to try to incorporate some of the activities into Adventures, but now I'm getting cold feet and thinking it might be too much for me to do at home. Maybe I'll get some good ideas from you!

Thanks for taking the time to post so faithfully! :)

  6. I can relate to the "bumps" (sigh) the last couple weeks more than ever, though things seem to be leveling out a little so hopefully we'll get some better attitudes around our house (including mom's ;)).
The drawings are GREAT!! We used the first Draw-Write-Now, the first ones were good, then got a little too hard for T, so I put it on the shelf for later, he loved them when we used it though.
