History: We traveled to California, Minnesota, and Oregon this week. Our travels took us down the Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails with the early pioneers. The girls began their study on the life of Abraham Lincoln.
Our favorite books this week:
Bible: Jesus as the Servant – Matthew 20:28 .. “… the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth to serve the lost and sinful. He was obedient to God and carried out His Will here on Earth – to serve, suffer and die for the sins of all mankind for all time!
Other Bible references: Isaiah 52 – 53, Phi. 2: 6-11 & John 13: 1-17
Dad’s Read Alouds this week:
Daddy is now in charge of reading the girls their ‘Chapter Books’ during the evening. This has been a wonderful change in our home. The girls enjoy hearing another voice besides mine. I also reserve a variety of books on CD for the girls to listen too when the lights go out at bedtime.
Science: Our experiments were on solids, liquids and gases, making a fizz, and how materials change – melting candles, boiling water, rust on a nail, etc.
MFW Adventures science books are a lot of fun because they have simple experiments for young children.
Our resources this year:
Make a gas
We made carbon dioxide gas that filled a balloon.
Make Gas Fizz
Did you know why pop has bubbles in it? Because the factory pumps gas bubbles into it.
The girls dropped raisins in the pop and they sink to the bottom. The gas bubbles stick to the raisins and they float to the top – then sink again.
Do you know why there are holes in a piece of cake or cupcake? They are made by baking soda in the cake mixture. The baking soda makes the bubbles when the mixture gets hot in the oven. This makes the cake rise.
Art and Crafts this week: This is an idol that the people chose to worship instead of God. A BEE visor I made with my Papa.

Leave a commit with your blog link so I can drop by and say Hi!
What a lovely week, Monica. I love reading your weekly updates.
ReplyDeleteYour science looks fun! Also having Daddy help with the reading, is a great idea! Good job!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing such a good job with your girls. Thanks for the inspiration! We are just now on week 10 of Adventures.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun two weeks. I need to get my review up. As we are heading into convention season, I am looking forward to next year. Have you decided if you will move onto ECC?
ReplyDeleteI found your blog from 2 ladybugs and a lizard. What a wonderful blog you have, lots of resources. I will be back often to visit!
ReplyDeleteHi! It could've been me that asked about book gifs! I can't remember what blog I asked it on now though. Old age there too! LOL The Grand Escape is a Level 4.2 book (according to the back). It's for C's Grade 3-5 book club. Thanks for stopping in by blog!

We are doing ECC next year and I am so excited. I would love to join your co-op! How long of a drive will I have from north Georgia? ;-) Actually, God confirmed our decision today when I found another family in our homeschool group that is doing ECC next year. We talked about getting together. I would love to know how you are picking the activities to do together. We are taking this and next week off of Adventures to work on a Geography Fair project but I can't wait to get back to it. Hope you guys are having a great week.
ReplyDeleteHi Monica!
ReplyDeleteWe're really enjoying ADV Science too. We are actually finishing up weeks 24-26, and then starting 1850-MOD (long story)...I'm trying to decide if we will continue ADV Bible and Science too, I would kind of hate to stop.
Thanks for linking up, I think it turned out really well... Hope it continues.
I've been meaning to ask you and Kattie...are you guys on the MFW Message Board?
Have a restful Sunday!

Hey Monica! You are one smart woman for delegating the read-alouds to Dad in the evening! :) Looks like y'all are still plugging away and having a great time!
ReplyDeleteAnd what's this about you and Erin doing a co-op together for ECC? Couldn't we just all three meet in, say, Mississippi once a week next year? ;)
Hope you have a great week!
Great idea Jennifer ;-)
