“The apple is a nutritious fruit, wholesome and easily digested. The varieties of apple differ in shape, size, color, texture, and flavor.” Handbook of Nature Study, pg 669.
Boy did we have a nice variety of apples to compare and contrast this week! The girls picked out about 13 varieties of apples from our local grocery store.
A7 choose to compare the Rome and the Granny Smith apples.
A7 liked the Rome apple better than the Granny Smith.
Rome: sweet, red, solid, pink inside when cut, and a great shape
Granny Smith: big, green, tart, and it doesn’t brown when cut
M5 compared the McIntosh and the Braeburn apple. She preferred the Braeburn because it was big, red w/green & yellow, crisp and tart-sweet. The McIntosh was little, red w/yellow, and soft.
The additional resources Barb provided were a great addition to our Apple Study. The e-book is available on the Handbook of Nature Study blog for only $8.95. Check out what other’s have done with their Apple Study here.
What did I learn from this fun Apple Study? That there are more great apples available to eat than just the GALA apple! Enjoy the harvest!
Nice apple selection!
ReplyDeleteYour girls did a great job on this study, including the Venn Diagram and the journal pages....and the tasting of course! Thank you so much for sharing your study with the OHC. I would love to use the last photo as the Outdoor Hour Challenge Photo of the Week. Could you email me and let me know if that is okay with you? harmonyfinearts@yahoo.com. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWow, 13 varieties just at your local store! We are so blessed in this place and time. I loved how they colored the apple page. Well done!
